yeaaaaahhhh… no. Fuck this meme. My secular life is built around respecting people’s personhood, and you *cannot* do that without respecting their choices. You can disagree. You can think that their choices are harmful to themselves and others and fight tooth and nail against hatred and bullshit. But you have to respect THEIR CHOICES.
idk it’s pretty dick to “think that someone’s choices are harmful for them” when they’re just for them and not for you. i also don’t like the idea of disagreeing with someone’s choice for themselves…reeks of a lot of things it really doesn’t need to reek of
I’m not perfect :D
More to the point though, I reserve the right to hold my own opinions of your decisions, while respecting your ability to make them. People who reject all medical treatment on religious grounds, for example. I’m totally cool with them having the right to do so, it’s their body and their life, and they should have full control over what they do. I would never campaign against their doing so, or tell them they are stupid or don’t know what they are doing, or speak against their decision an anything more than the most general terms I’m employing here. Rarely even that, because it’s none of my damn business.
Doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s harmful to them however. That’s just my internal thought, not to be pushed onto others, and sectioned off from how I actually treat and interact with people.
yes, but that actually has had a maleffect on people.
me off-handedly believing in unicorns doesn’t. no one else has to believe unicorns exist, but if they’re judging me for thinking they do while “respecting” that…doesn’t sound very right to me.
(i don’t believe in unicorns, but i believes other stuff)
Thank you!
And that Judgy McJudgerson attitude WILL leech out somehow. You (general you, not you=DTWPS, obviously) may think you’re being slick and hiding your comtempt and judgement well, but it always gets expressed even if it’s only around the edges. And then your only hope is that the person is either too dumb to notice or too polite to say anything.
This is possible, but I’m going to make sure something is clear because DTWPS’ post made me realize my words could be easily be read to imply that I think religion, faith, or spirituality in general is self harm. I don’t, I was thinking of the specific case I was mentioning.
I’m sorry I didn’t phrase that better, and it was probably a rather poor choice of insert as it wasn’t germane to the general discussion at hand other than as a descriptor of my (very poorly defined) personal philosophy.
Regardless, I’ll take the general case that you are responding too, and spend some time with it and my own actions and thought processes. :/
It’s simple. What I believe or don’t believe ain’t none of your damn business unless I’m after converting you or trying to make my religion law. Since I’m not and never did even when I was Xtian, ya gotz nanthang! So drop the concern trolling with that dash of White Man’s Burden (must tell the po’ hapless darkies [cuz most of us are religious and see our faiths as a strength—hell it’s keeping us from capping every White person we see—so you’d think you’d be grateful for our primitive believings] they’ze hurtin’ theyself cuz they too damn dumb and darkie-like to knowz betta). Basically sayin, you ain’t got shit to respect or disrespect about me in that respect so keep your “concerns” to yadamnself.
I am so confused right now. I don’t understand how you go from “fuck this meme that expresses ill will towards practitioners of faith” to expressing ill will toward practitioners of faith. I don’t feel like an opinion is even solicited in personal matters. If someone wants to be a nun, practice abstinence, refuse blood transfusions etc. what concern of yours is it? My thing from the beginning was, just don’t let your beliefs conflict with how you treat people on a humane level, no matter how differing their faiths may be. Most Atheists/Agnostics’ discontent comes from just that, but as Riley has consistently stated, not all faiths indulge in that type of condemnation.
